Hallux valgus/bunion & its natural treatments

treatment for bunions

Hallux valgus is unsightly but it’s mainly painful and disabling. Surgery can’t be the first choice solution. That’s why people suffering from a bunion are looking for natural treatments to delay its progression and to be relieved. Fortunately, there are some…

Make some physiotherapy movements at home

There are some little exercises easy to do at home in order to avoid the worsening of hallux valgus. They require only few accessories (or even none) and their objectives are to maintain the flexibility of the joint, to strengthen the forefoot muscles and to limit the pronation. Ideally, it is best to do them as often as possible to reduce the hallux valgus complications in a natural way.

If your hallux valgus is at an advanced stage and your great toe doesn’t move laterally anymore, you won’t be able to do all the exercises of this treatment.

Use the benefits of essential oils to treat the pain

Some essential oils, particularly the wintergreen essential oil, are recommended to soothe the pain during inflammatory episodes. Indeed, the wintergreen contains derivatives (by-products) of aspirin.

So the essential oil can take effect continuously all day long.

Wear devices to treat hallux valgus

Before surgical treatment, there are more classic solutions to fight against the hallux valgus progression. Indeed, hallux valgus is a deformity that cannot disappear over time. When the great toe is still moving laterally, it is recommended to wear bunion straighteners that can realign the toe such as the flexible bunion corrector*. Some bunion fixers can be worn during the day and while walking to prevent further aggravation of the condition. Others can be worn at night to reduce night pains and protect the bunion from contact.

When the big toe can no longer move laterally, it’s not possible to realign it anymore. You should then turn to protectors that are going to relieve pressure and chafing the bunion: the EPITACT® bunion protector*.

Before a surgery, it is sometimes possible to find natural treatments to limit the pain caused by hallux valgus and slow its progression. In addition, choosing the right shoes contributes to fighting against the worsening of the deformity.
